This series began as an exercise of building texture on recycled canvases. Through the manipulation of acrylic paint, each image began to reveal itself to me as I introduced charcoal for highly gestural mark making, using ink to create controlled dribbles and watercolor washes which gave the work varying degrees of light and shade, perspective and illusion.
The visual elements began to reveal themselves as symbolic organic root systems, entwined with itself. I immediately knew this reflected the current environment I live in. It is a dry and hard landscape where roots of vegetation can be seen above ground reaching and struggling for moisture. Entwining within each other out of connection and competitive survival.
As the series progressed I felt a metaphoric connection to the human root system, as a foundation to our lives. We build layers from birth. We evolve organically. Our own roots continually reaching for stability and entwining for connection and our species survival. Perhaps the ultimate search for love.
